A game built in public

Buildcraft is a free browser real-time strategy game reproducing the mechanics of StarCraft: Brood War (1998) with original factions, names, art, audio and story. Nick Dat Le is building it solo in public using AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex) and an AI-driven Blender pipeline baking 3D models to 2D sprites. No Blizzard code, data files, art or audio is used. Every use of AI is disclosed in the project.

Questions

Is this StarCraft?

Buildcraft is a port and re-skin of StarCraft: Brood War. It uses Brood War's rules, units, stats, build times, ranges and balance, but all factions, names, art and story are original. It is a fan project, not Blizzard's game.

Is it free?

Yes. Buildcraft runs in the browser and costs nothing to play.

Is multiplayer available?

Not yet. The first build is a skirmish against the built-in AI in the browser. Multiplayer comes last.

How is it built?

It is built by a solo developer. AI coding agents write the code, and an AI-driven Blender pipeline bakes 3D models to 2D sprites. No Blizzard code, data or art is used, and all AI use is disclosed.

Credits

The project relies on AI coding agents, Blender, and open web technologies. It is a one-person build with those tools, and is built and maintained by Nick Dat Le, whose other work is at nickdatle.com.
